Sick or injured equines presented to NBC Widener Hospital are admitted (admission fee of ~$85), and if euthanasia is warranted, the cost is approximately $75. Body disposal for animals over 250 pounds is $35.
Sick or injured equines submitted to the PADLS (Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic Laboratory Services) pathology service (with the intention of a necropsy) are charged the current rate for barbiturate. This is variable and dose-related, and it can easily exceed $50. Again, the body disposal fee is $35. (An adult horse necropsy fee is $98.)
The hospital has a long-standing policy of not accepting horses for solely for the purpose of euthanasia, i.e., for the owner's convenience. The exceptions to this are 1) the horse is a recently discharged patient, 2) the horse is currently under treatment by Field Service, 3) the horse will be used for a sanctioned research or teaching exercise.
